QUESTIONS, ANYONE?...Published author, Lori Williams, spoke with Renae McNiel's 7th
grade reading classes and Sharon Sherry's 7th and 8th grade reading classes on Friday, May
21. The students have read her novel, Being Me, and had the chance to ask her questions
about it. She also talked about and read excerpts from a sequel to the novel that she has
written and hopes to get published soon. She is working on a 3rd novel that, she says, is
nothing like the first two.

Award presented to Mrs. Hernandez by the Hondo/D'Hams
Rotary Club. A 1989 graduate of Hondo High School, Mrs.
Hernandez has been teaching at McDowell for nine years and
is currently studying to become a social studies teacher Ac-
cording to Mr. Gann, no matter what is asked of her, Mrs.
Hernandez always does a fantastic job.

Scott A. Francis, son of Scott
O. and Mary Beth Francis and
grandson of Fred and Mary Lee
Jungman, both of Rio Medina,
graduated from Texas Tech
Medical School on Saturday,
May 22, with a doctorate of
medicine.
Scott, along with his wife,
Jocylin, w ill move to Temple, in
June where he will begin a four
year residency in psychiatry at
Scott & White Hospital.

SALYARDS
Air Force Airman Alaina D.
Salyards has graduated from
basic military training at
Lackland Air Force Base, San
Antonio.
During the six weeks of train-
ing. the airman studied the Air
Force mission, organization, and
military customs and courtesies;
performed drill and ceremony
marches, and received physical
training, rifle marksmanship,
field training exercises, and spe-
cial training in human relations.
In addition, airmen who com-
plete basic training earn credits
toward an associate degree
through the Community College
of the Air Force.
Salyards is the daughter of
Debbie Densmore of County
Ropad, Hondo, and Alan
Salyards of Locust St., Philadel-
phia, PA.
In 2003, she graduated from
Medina Valley High School,
Castroville.

Food Service Program. Meals
will be provided at the site listed
below.
People who are eligible to par-
ticipate in the program must not

Shauna Santellan
receives honor
The United States Achieve-
ment Academy announced that
Shauna Santellan of Hondo has
been recognized for academic-
achievement as a United States
National Honor Roll Award
winner.
Shauna Santellan, who at-
tends 8th grade at McDowell
Middle School will appear in
the United States Achievement
Academy Official Yearbook,
which is published nationally.
"Recognizing and supporting
our youth is more important
than ever before in America’s
history. Certainly, United States
Achievement Academy winners
should be congratulated and
appreciated for their dedication
to excellence and achieve-
ment," said Dr. George Stevens,
executive director of the United
States Achievement Academy.
The USAA National Honor
Roll Awards provide honor roil
students with many benefits and
services and is a great tribute to
a student’s dedication, talent,
and ability.
Shauna is the daughter of
Stephen and Yvonne Santellan
of Hondo. Her grandparents are
Wayne and Oralia Gallegas of
San Antonio and Juan and
Carmen Hernandez, of Hondo.
SRSU holds
commencement
at Uvalde campus
Two hundred and sixteen stu-
dents received their degrees
from Sul Ross State University
during the spring semester com-
mencement held Saturday, May,
15, in the Pete P. Gallego Cen-
ter on the Alpine campus, and
at Uvalde High School at The
Rio Grande College.
Graduates from the area, all
receiving diplomas from the Rio
Grande Campus, included:

UNT dean’s list
Denton —University of North
Texas students, including one

to the dean’s list for spring 2004.
Timothy Louis Graff, a 2002
graduate of Hondo High School,
earned the honor for the just-
completed semester.
To be named to the dean's list,
students must complete at least
12 academic hours during the
semester with a grade point av-
erage of 3.5 to 3.9.
Lutz named to
SHSU Dean’s list
Krista Sue Lutz of D’Hanis
has been named to the Dean's
list at Sam Houston State Uni-
versity, for Spring 2004.
The Dean's list at Sam Hous-
ton consists of all full-time stu-
dents having grade point aver-
ages of 3.5 and above. A per-
fect record (A) averages 4.0.
