The NCAA Softball Rules Committee on Wednesday proposed modifying video review challenges regarding a runner leaving a base early on a pitch.

I do not like it… if it’s really close and the umps choose to favor “Early”, obviously taking a run off the board could be vital in a close game…

I do not like it when the umps have more say so!

This is great news the way I read the article. They spent so many brain cells trying to figure out how to speed up the game, then allowed too many video reviews

Agree. It makes perfect sense as it eliminates reviews in cases where "leaving early" does not directly affect the outcome of the play.

What? Using common sense? Definitely impressed with this

Yes definitely common sense. I hated that review and equate it to a review in football where they are looking to determine if the runner reached the line to gain and during the review the officials sees the Left Guard holding and instead of the initial review being determined they are now calling offensive holding on the play.

If leaving a base early does not affect the play then there shouldn't be a penalty for doing so. If a batter is walked it shouldn't matter if the runner leaves early if she would have been advanced to another base anyway.

Yes and that happened I think in the NCAA tournament to Riley Boone on a ball four. Replay showed that she left the base just a thousandeth of a sec before the ball left the pitchers hand and she was called out. I think it ended the inning. I thought what a ticky tacky call that was.

The best part was mike white used up his 2 challenges trying to get Rylie erased from 1B. There were far more critical plays he could have saved those challenges for. I guess if you're trying to win a 2-1 game, that's fine, but when you know you probably are going to give up some crooked numbers at some point, I'd hold onto those.

If they ever start giving a challenge back when successfully overturned as Patty has suggested? Maybe you get 1 challenge back maximum per game? It would definitely make challenging everything you think you'll win more appealing in a close game.

But if you can end a major rally or take runs off the board, that would be your best use of those replays.

I thought the challenge he won with Boone leaving early was a huge win for him. Anytime you can get a free out to end the inning and plus it made Hodge lead off the next inning. I gave him big kudos for that challenge.

Yes, it was early in the game though, and he barely won that challenge. Could have been confirmed instead very easily, as it was a 2nd time where Rylie left just on time.

Patty decided to not challenge a call later, because it was too early, too close, and too inconsequential.

There were a least a couple of situations this year where texass badly needed a challenge but were out of them already.

Situations where you can take a run off the board and turn it into an out are the best, in my mind.

I wouldn’t want to be the person who was responsible for watching the base runners feet each pitch and be responsible for telling the head coach they should challenge. Could you imagine being Mike White’s grad assistant and telling him the runner left early and be wrong ? I honestly don’t know how people can see that from the dugout, they must have much better vision than mine!

I have seen so many reviews in all sports that have them where you think common sense woukd easily apply and the outcome determined by the umps makes one scratch their head and think what replay are they watching!

The less power the umps get, the better!
