Is Glenlivet 18 a peaty? ›

As with all scotch, the whiskies of The Glenlivet are distilled from malted barley. It is not peated—a characteristic common to Speyside—so the whiskies lack the smoky taste often associated with scotch (there are exceptions, such as Nàdurra Peated Cask Finish).

Drinking it neat is a particularly good option for aged or rarer whiskies that deserve a sip without any other ingredients impacting the flavour. Drink at room temperature without water first to note the bottle's individual notes.

The Glenlivet distillery is a distillery near Ballindalloch in Moray, Scotland, that produces single malt Scotch whisky. It is the oldest legal distillery in the Highlands of Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and has operated almost continuously since.

There's long been Costco lore about the manufacturer behind its baby diapers, coffee, and even parchment paper. When it comes to the booze, like Costco's Kirkland Signature Blended Scotch Whisky, California-based Scotch exporter Alexander Murray & Company is the company you can thank.

Alexander Murray is a Californian company that was conceived by a group of Scottish immigrants in 2004, and in addition to Costco, the company provides its scotch to multiple stores including Trader Joe's and Total Wines & More.

Kirkland Signature Blended Scotch whisky is reminiscent of Dewar's, a whisky it is often compared to. That doesn't mean it is Dewar's in Kirkland packaging, although it could be.

Up here in the northern climes at The Glenlivet, we don't often need to cool our drinks. But you should enjoy your whisky whichever way you choose. There's no right or wrong answer when it comes to ice. Crushed, cubed, turned into a decorative ice ring or none at all.

Safely stowed, a bottle of The Glenlivet can be enjoyed months, or even years, after opening. As a general rule a cool, odour-free environment of medium humidity is best to ensure your favourite whiskies are kept in tip-top condition.

As a Scotch whisky approaches its 18th year, the edges that may have been sharp in its youth have mellowed, and its profile has rounded out. The longer ageing period allows for a harmonious blend of flavours to emerge.

The Glenlivet distillery

After a recent expansion and refurb it is one of the most modern distilleries in Speyside with a vast Brigg's mash tun which sends clear wort to wooden washbacks. Distillation, which is slow, takes place in two stillhouses, in seven sets of stills.

Old style discontinued bottling of one of the biggest single malts in the world. The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, now discontinued, was a cornerstone of The Glenlivet distillery's core range.

Over the course of 18 years, our Master Distiller, Alan Winchester, takes this expression through a combination of cask types, including both first and second-fill American oak (for tropical fruitiness) and ex-sherry oak (for spicy complexity).

Boasting a complex balance of flavours - ripe cherries, bitter dark chocolate, fresh honeycomb and aromatic peat smoke – this is a proud tribute to our five keystones of production.

The Classic Laddie and Bunnahabhain 12 are fantastic whiskies for those who don't want peat. The Highland and Speyside regions generally don't use peat as often, but that is not 100%. Benromach is a Speyside that uses peat. Lowland whiskies such as Auchentoshan and Bladnoch are another option.

Peated whisky has an infamous smoky and earthy taste and it can add both complexity and intensity to a dram.
